We do NOT sell "Singles" cruises!
First of all, let’s just get something out of the way... This is NOT an article about providing or matching you up with a traveling companion, nor is it about those typical, sometimes scary, “singles cruises” we’ve all read about. That’s absolutely not what Premier does or is about!
We educate 'Solo' Travelers about how affordable, fun, safe, and hassle-free a river or small ship cruise is.
The purpose of this article and the rest of the companion articles in our "Solo" Section, including: “River cruising as a Single or Solo Traveler,” is to provide those who travel solo with a better understanding of the many wonderful and exciting experiences to be enjoyed aboard a destination-focused river or small ship cruise vacation. We’ll also provide a glimpse into the spacious environment, intimate atmosphere and friendly ambiance of the luxury river and small ship cruise lines plying the rivers, coastal waterways, and oceans of North America, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, China and Egypt.
As you read the articles in our 'Solo' Traveler section (and many of the others on this site), we hope they’ll build a level of trust about our company and an appreciation of how the Premier Team works with our solo travelers — indeed, with all of our customers — to ensure they always get the product that best matches their needs, desires, wants and budget; thus always ensuring they get the very best deal available along with impeccable personal service. In this, as well as other articles in the 'Solo' section, we do discuss small ship cruises, but our primary focus is on 'solo' river cruises in Europe as that market has the largest selection of solo space available, along with the best solo programs waiving single supplement fares in whole or in part.
Update on 'solo' traveler river cruise and small ship cruise demand.
Demand for river and small ship cruises has never been stronger. As a result, ALL river cruise lines have a LIMITED number of special offers for solo travelers going forward. We do have a complete listing of sailings with good solo space available, so if you're looking to cruise this year (And, it is NEVER to soon to start planning for next year and beyond!), please request quotes very, very soon. Call 1-855-255-1200, toll-free, to get your FREE quote.
In recognition of the growing demand by solo travelers who want to enjoy an affordable river cruise, the most solo friendly river cruise line, AmaWaterways, enhanced their solo traveler program a few years ago. In many cases, our solo travelers — on select ships and departures — can travel in a balcony stateroom or a less expensive window stateroom at a reduced single supplement fare, or even with no single supplement at all. Another very 'solo' friendly river cruise line is Avalon Waterways. Currenly, they have a 'solo' traveler program that waives ALL single supplement fares on select Europe itineraries and departure dates. Both AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways solo offers are capacity controlled, so please CALL NOW FOR COMPLETE DETAILS BEFORE SPACE IS GONE.
Why choose a river or small ship cruise over other vacations? Easy!
River and small ship cruising has become two of the most requested and affordable vacations for mature travelers looking for in-depth destination experiences. Because river and small ships stay in port much longer than ocean ships, you get to see much, much more of the destination. And, the fact that ocean ships cannot even go to some of the world’s most exciting cities such as Paris, Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Hanoi or Siem Reap, to mention but a few, makes river cruising the best way to leisurely visit so many of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating places. The same holds true with small ship cruising: discover the hidden fjords, bays and inlets of the Alaskan Waterways; anchor off shallow cays in the Caribbean; drift close to subantarctic islands in Antarctica; or anchor off a small Greek island in the Mediterranean... you would never get to see, much less be able to get off the ship at any of these destinations on a huge, deep draft ocean going ship. By the way, if you haven't read our article, "Top 10 Reasons to Take a River Cruise," please take a moment to do so!
For those who travel alone, a river or small ship cruise provides the perfect atmosphere for rewarding, enriching and hassle-free experiences.
How so, you ask? Unlike huge, impersonal ocean cruise ships with thousands of passengers and lots of kids, river cruise ships carry on average only about 150 passengers and a crew of 50; small ships only about 150 to 300 or so, and likewise a very small crew. On both, the crews will quickly get to know who you are, call you by name, and make sure you’re well taken care of and incredibly pampered.
With complimentary pre-planned shore excursions in every port, you’ll never have to worry about what to do and who to do it with. You’ll travel in small groups with your own English-speaking tour escort. It’s not only a great way to see the destination, it creates an easy and comfortable way to meet your new traveling companions, including many other solo travelers.

Let's discuss the wonderful, state-of-the-art riverships now available...
Today’s luxurious, spacious river cruise ships transport guests effortlessly and without any chance of sea-sickness to some of the most interesting places in the world. Staterooms and suites are lavishly appointed with everything you might receive from a five-star luxury resort: comfortable beds with European-style duvets, plush linens and towels, scrumptious L’Occitane creams and lotions, hairdryers, robes, flat-screen TV and, of course, free wifi/internet. Unlike the huge, ocean going ships, all staterooms and suites on a river ship are outside with most ships now offering French or full-sized balconies. All ships are fully air-conditioned and non smoking.
We would be remiss if we did not briefly mention the culinary experience you’ll also enjoy each day of your exciting river cruise. Simply stated, you’ll be treated to sumptuous meals on your river cruise prepared by some of the best European-trained culinary teams found anywhere. The menus change daily and feature the freshest of fresh foods, often brought aboard the same day. Also, unlike the huge, ocean going cruises, your all-inclusive price includes complimentary fine regional wines and beers at dinner!
If you haven’t already, please take a bit of time to read our reviews about the river cruise lines, their ships, amenities, and destinations. You’re sure to find more than one cruise line you’d like to sail upon!
One very important consideration for all 'solo' travelers is price.
While at first glance, a river or small ship cruise may seem a bit more expensive than an large ship ocean trip with 1000s of passengers, it is. But there is so, so much more included in your price than on an large ship ocean cruise. And, one of the things we feel you should strongly consider is your cabin type. Yes, everyone wants to be in a balcony, but balcony staterooms are more expensive, usually $700-$1000 more even if there are two people in the stateroom. If it is your first river or small ship cruise experience, don't stay home because a balcony stateroom is beyond your budget, sail in a beautiful, 2-fixed-window stateroom that almost all river and small ship cruise lines offer. These large staterooms are identical in decor and amenities to the balcony stateroom, but without the balcony. What you'll also discover is that you really don't spend too much time in your cabin as you will be in the lounges or up on the sun deck during your time aboard ship. Please, please take this advice, you'll thank us in the long run when you return home from one of your best vacations ever... we promise!
Discover glorious river and small ship cruise destinations.
Walt Whitman once wrote, “Sit by a river, find peace and meaning in the rhythm of the lifeblood of the Earth.” He could not have written a more appropriate prologue to a river cruise vacation had he tried. Whitman could have said the same thing about intimate, small ship cruises! There is something so inspiring, so rejuvenating, so mystical about bodies of water like rivers and oceans. Perhaps it’s because we all draw our roots from the water, or maybe it’s something more ethereal than we can put into words. They are special places for most of us, and there's no better way to explore the world's great rivers or far flung, less visited ocean destinations than on a luxurious river or small ship cruise vacation.
Since there are more solo traveler offers and accommodations available on river cruises, let's talk more about the rivers, ports, and destinations you'll visit on a Europe, Egypt, China, or Southeast Asia river cruise.
Imagine one or two magical weeks traveling the Rhine, Main or Danube Rivers. Imagine the vistas as you sail by Holland’s wooden windmills, walk through the majestic tulip fields of Holland’s incredible Keukenhof Gardens (Perhaps buying some for your cabin, too!). Picture the view from the sundeck as you sail down the Rhine River looking up and marveling at the fairy-tale castles and vine-covered hillsides while sipping a delicious regional wine. Imagine yourself sailing through the engineering marvel of the Main-Danube Canal (a liquid highway connecting Western and Eastern Europe) through the awe-inspiring Wachau Valley of Austria, home of Mozart, the Waltz and the delicious Sachertorte. Stroll along the cobblestone streets and charming town squares of medieval villages such as Durnstein, and linger for a while in a café watching the world go by — it can’t get any more rejuvenating.
Of course, river cruising isn’t just in Europe. There’s also river cruising in North and South America, Russia, China, Southeast Asia, and Egypt to mention just a few. In Russia, follow in the footsteps of Peter the Great visiting the great cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and others, while sailing in ultimate comfort upon the Volga River. China? The magnificent Yangtze River will take you on a spellbound cruise to places and sights you’ve only dreamed about. Southeast Asia’s fascinating Mekong River will introduce you to the treasures of Cambodia and Vietnam. Only recently opened to all travelers: river cruises on Myanmar's (previously known as Burma) fascinating Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers. Do you have the archeologist’s itch to explore the history of the Pharaohs and ancient monuments and pyramids of Egypt? Then a Nile river cruise is for you.
Simply put... river cruising has universal appeal to those who enjoy travel and experiencing the world and what it has to offer. No matter what specific interests you may have: art, history, food, gardening, wine, music, religious heritage, bicycling, ancient cultures, architecture — the list goes on... you’re sure to find an affordable cruise that goes where you want to go.
We’ll also make sure you’re thoroughly prepared and ready to enjoy your river cruise.
One of our expert Personal Travel Planners will match you with the right cruise and the best cruise line to suit your lifestyle, destination choice, and budget. Each of our planners is well traveled with at least 20 years of experience. They’re always eager and capable of answering any questions you may have.
For many, traveling to foreign lands can be a bit daunting and at times even overwhelming.
With that in mind, the Premier Team will always share their many years of international travel experience, helping you plan, prepare, and even suggest a list of clothes and items to pack for your specific river cruise… they can even give you the type of climate and temperature ranges you can expect in the destinations you'll visit.
If you’re doing a pre and/or post land stay, your personal planner will also share some of our personal-favorite sightseeing hints and useful information on local transportation, cool restaurants, best shopping opportunities, best photo-ops, and even local tipping customs — all guaranteed to greatly improve the enjoyment of any river cruise, make it “hassle free” and truly one of your best vacations ever. Our Team's experience and unfailing dedication to our customers really does make Premier the best travel agency around to help you select, plan, and prepare for your dream-come-true river cruise vacation!
After returning home, our customers often tell us that other passengers asked how they new so much about the ports they had called at during the cruise, or places our customers took them for a shore excursion surprise (Like a yummy little sachertorte shop in Vienna that we love!) if they'd never been there before. Our travelers take great satisfaction in telling their fellow shipmates that their personal travel planners at Premier always give them the inside scoop about every aspect of their voyage.
But, these important points are only a small part of why Premier River Cruises is North America’s best travel agency for river and small ship cruise vacations. One of the primary reasons is our exclusive access to special offers which, in many cases, allow single travelers to avoid the dreaded “single supplement” charges found on most large ship ocean cruises or land tours.
Have we piqued your interest in a river or small ship cruise? Ready to begin choosing and planning one? Give us a call at 1-855-255-1200 for more info, or use the “Get A Quick Quote” email option above. We know you won’t be disappointed with Premier or a river or small ship cruise vacation!
